What is a Doula?

A doula is with you through your pregnancy, labour, birth and immediate postpartum. They are hired by, and work for you with no other purpose than to provide you with the best possible birth experience. You will receive tips and techniques for comfort in labour, emotional support to lessen any anxieties or fears, initial breastfeeding support, and information on community resources for any needs outside a doula's scope of practice.

Doulas are there to help you navigate and make decisions regarding your pregnancy and birth. Doulas allow you to have all the information to make an informed decision. They are associated with a reduced risk of cesarean births, decreased use of induction, unwanted epidurals, and other external medical interventions. They are in your corner to support your unique choices for your unique family.

A doula is not a primary care provider. They do not perform clinical tasks, read or interpret medical scans, or diagnose. You must have a primary care provider (Midwife or OB) attend your birth. It is out of scope for a doula to attend an unassisted birth.
